Dear Families of the School District of Black Hawk:
Today, October 16, 2020, our School District was notified by the Lafayette County Health Department that a student or staff member in the Black Hawk School District has tested positive for Covid-19. This is the fifth case within the district. In the past couple of alerts, I have indicated school or district numbers, from this point forward the number will always be indicative of the district numbers.
The individual who tested positive for COVID-19 was in attendance during the infectious period and has been identified. The district in conjunction with the county has identified the close contacts to the person who tested positive. No additional grades will be required to learn virtually at this time. Only students that have been notified to quarantine or choose to learn virtually will need to do so.
The district and county will continue to monitor the situation. If more information becomes available that we can share or changes the current decision, we will inform you as soon as possible.
The only grades that are currently required to learn virtually are ECH and 4K.
COVID-19 is an illness caused by a new coronavirus. It spreads from person to person through droplets created when we cough, sneeze, talk, sing or laugh. Most people—especially young people—who get COVID-19 have mild illness, similar to having a cold or the flu. However, in others it can cause severe illness, such as pneumonia.
Symptoms of COVID-19 include:
- Fever (temperature 100.4°F or higher)
- Trouble breathing
- Muscle/body aches
- Loss of sense of taste or smell
- Runny nose or nasal congestion
- Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea

Parents of children who had close contact with the individual with COVID-19 at school have received additional communication from our school indicating that their child had close contact to a person with COVID-19. These families will also receive additional information from the County Health Department.
Prevent Further Spread
The following guidelines will help to prevent further spread of illness at our school:
- Keep students home from school if they are sick.
- Notify the school if your child is diagnosed with COVID-19.
- Notify the school if your child had contact with someone who you know was
diagnosed with COVID-19. They will need to stay home until it is deemed safe for
them to return to school.
- Encourage good habits: frequent handwashing, covering coughs and sneezes,
use of face coverings in public, and staying home as much as possible.
- Answer any calls you receive from the County Health Department throughout the school year.
